There are at least two ways to view Tom Mahony's new novel Pacific Offering. The first is to see the story in conventional terms, as a tale about two friends on arguably their last Baja surf trip together. Both are young men in their late twenties, both standing on the threshold of mid-life, but each holding altogether differing philosophical outlooks on life, and especially on the inevitability of change. While the protagonist, Beck Richards, is eager to navigate a new and different course in his life (even if he is vague on the particulars), his companion, Parry Simms, is much more reluctant. The latter is content to drift along, bump from experience to experience, and not think too hard about the future. As the story progresses, following numerous twists and turns that lead them seemingly all over the Baja peninsula, these differing outlooks coalesce to become a gaping chasm that inevitably pushes the friends farther and farther apart. Indeed, by the end of the novel, this chasm has created consequences that the two men must confront, each in his own way.A second way to view the novel involves scrutinizing it through the lens of Joseph Campbell's monomyth (also known as the "hero's journey"). Mahony isn't afraid to use elements of the monomyth, whether consciously or unconsciously, to craft a novel that is about a young man's journey into both the unknown and, on another level, into the deeper recesses of his mind. Like the hero venturing forth to confront forces, both benign and malevolent, that will eventually provide him with deep insight, Mahony's protagonist journeys down the Baja peninsula hopeful that the barren landscape will somehow provide him with answers to all his myriad questions, and perhaps even, like Campbell's hero, bestow upon him a great boon or insight.
Of course, there is a third way to view the novel: As a fun adventure tale filled with dusty Baja roads, dangerous surf, bandits, corrupt cops, and other hazards. However one wishes to view the novel, one thing is eminently clear - Mahony has constructed an exciting, thoughtful story that is well worth the read. And if you are a veteran Baja surf rat, Mahony's vivid images of the Baja landscape, its waves, and interesting characters will no doubt bring back a flood of memories.

Exciting surfing adventure down the Baja peninisula where everything that can go wrong does. Mahony is a talented writer who makes the main characters, Beck and Parry, appealing despite (or because of?) their flaws. His descriptions carry the reader right into the scenes and bring the sights, sounds, and even smells of the desert and ocean alive. Pop open a beer and enjoy the journey from hell!
Beck and Perry are lifelong buddies with the kind of friendship that is comforting and familiar, but it's not the kind that fosters maturity. At 28, their strongest connection still simply comes from their mutual love of surfing. They plan one last surf trip down to Baja where their relationship loses its comfort, and challenges them to grow.
The trip is a medley of beauty and disaster. The Baja peninsula comes to life with Mahony's gorgeous descriptions. Mexico's raw beauty can be seen, felt, even tasted as the reader travels south along the coast with Beck and Perry in their old battered truck. Despite nature's beauty, the trip is disastrous as their truck continually breaks down, they get robbed, they run into corrupt cops, and even their beloved ocean has its way with them. It's the surf trip from hell, but Beck's desire to find his old girlfriend Elena keeps them traveling farther south until they reach her, and the perfect swell.
Mahony's story is engaging and even exciting with its unexpected twists. It's written with the authenticity of someone who has made that trip enough times to perfectly capture the subtleties of the Baja landscape as well as the south of the border experience. It's also written with depth and understanding of these two characters, and how difficult growing up, even at 28, can be.
Surfers will love every bit of this book. "The swell was growing by the minute. It was all energy wind and sea, destroy and build, erode and deposit. A lovely mess." But even non-surfers will enjoy the genuine peek into the curious lifestyle that compels someone to let the ocean, and her many moods, keep such a tight grip on one's life. "'Everything else in life was a necessary evil we had to deal with so we could surf. That stretch of beach was our entire universe.'"
Pacific Offering is a great story, and Tom Mahony is an excellent writer.
